Snoring is one of the most common sleeping disorders in the United States. In fact, it is so common that few people even see it as an actual disorder. Yet many Americans miss out on deep sleep patterns because of snoring problems. This leads to fatigue and sleepiness throughout the day. Allowed to persist long enough, snoring that disrupts your sleeping patterns can lead to serious health complications and it may even cause you to fall asleep at inopportune times, such as while driving.

So what can you do about snoring? For answers, I turned to the best site for mattress reviews, qMattresses.com, where they have a special section for sleep problems. They offered ten tips for individuals that struggle with snoring problems.

Your Health Could be the Problem

Approximately one-third of the adult population in the United States is considered obese. Even more are considered to be overweight. Excess weight can contribute significantly to snoring problems because excess fat, when sleeping, can block the airways. This, of course, causes snoring. In some cases, losing weight may not correct the problem, but it can help some.

Smoking is another factor that can contribute to snoring problems. Of course, there are many reasons to stop smoking – lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, emphysema, chronic bronchitis…now you can just add snoring to the mix. If you need help quitting, talk to your doctor. There are new medications, support groups and therapies that have been very successful in helping smokers quit.

How You Sleep

Side sleeping may help a chronic snorer, but it isn’t a sure-fire method. Still, if you can manage sleeping on your side, it’s worth a try. Mattress experts at qMattresses.com recommend using a latex or memory foam mattress or topper to help make sleeping on your side more comfortable. They also recommend that you try using pillows to prop your body up if you have a tendency to roll over on your back at night.

Keeping Your Sinuses Clear

Sinus congestion brought on by hay fever, allergies, sinus infections and colds can all contribute to snoring problems. For some people, these health conditions are extremely persistent and you may need medical guidance in keeping your sinuses clear. For others, some over-the-counter or homeopathic remedies may help clear the sinuses before you lay down at night. I personally use a highly diluted apple cider vinegar solution to clear my sinuses at night.

Breathing Exercises and Other Natural Remedies

I don’t like visiting the doctor unless I have to and I always prefer a natural method for healing my ailments, if at all possible. A few ideas for treating snoring naturally include acupuncture, acupressure, breathing exercises, dental fixtures and herbal supplements. Keep in mind, however, that there are FDA warnings about the lack of testing on herbal and natural methods (of course, very few people die from natural methods when you compare them to prescription drugs) so educate yourself before you start a natural method for stopping snoring.

Medication, Medical Treatment and Surgery

If all else fails, then you have no choice. You have to visit a doctor and get your snoring problems under control. There are a couple of different surgeries and medical treatments that can be used, including the removal of a portion of the tissue in the back of the throat, radiofrequency ablation, CPAP machines and medication. Keep in mind, all of these forms of treatment have potential side effects and you should try all non-surgical treatment methods first.
