Never, in the history of time, has it ever been so difficult to purchase a new mattress. The worst part is – it’s only getting harder. As mattress manufacturers compete for your business, they create more and more mattress models. And while this may be a good thing when it comes to finding a mattress that is more personalized to your specific needs, it is a dilemma that has most mattress shoppers extremely confused.

Thankfully, there are still a few places to find high quality mattress reviews and mattress buying advice – reviews and advice not tainted with mattress manufacturer/store commissions and endorsements. These sources are the best place to find out the truth about what makes a good mattress and how you should go about buying your next mattress. One of those sources, qMattresses.com, offers an “Ask the Mattress Expert” section where mattress shoppers can ask their specific questions and get the answer they desperately need.

For some, like Cindy, it is the last stop before going crazy.

Cindy had purchased a TempurePedic mattress because it had come highly recommended by her chiropractor. Unfortunately, her mattress didn’t even last past the 90 day trial period before it started having problems with sagging. While she may get some of her money back because she is still within the trial period, there are extra fees that the mattress industry won’t tell you about, like the $150 restocking fee that Cindy and her husband will have to pay before they can get a refund on their mattress.

Even after paying the restocking fee and getting her money back, Cindy is still going to be faced with having to buy a new mattress. After a raw deal like the one Cindy has just been through – spending thousands of dollars on a mattress, having it fail within just weeks of purchasing it and then finding out that the warranty isn’t all it’s cracked up to be – it’s easy to see why many consumers, including Cindy, are at their wits-end when it comes to mattress shopping.

Thankfully, the mattress expert, Peter Cancelli, had some sound advice for Cindy:

Peter explained to Cindy how memory foam works. The pillowy, sinking sensation you get with memory foam can break down very quickly because there are no inner components to offer support. Unfortunately, support is what you need to sleep comfortably.

On the other hand, too hard of a surface and you may experience trouble falling asleep. Too much pressure may be placed on your hips, your buttocks or other pressure points. Therefore, you need a mattress that offers support and comfort.

The dilemma, according to Peter, is that it seems you have to sacrifice one for the other. Because of this, Peter says that the best option is to purchase a firm mattress and then purchase a high quality mattress topper to add cushioning to the mattress itself. This provides you with the support you need from the mattress and the comfort you need from the topper. You can always add more comfort, but it is next to impossible to add more support to a mattress.

If you have questions about your mattress shopping experience or just need some advice on the mattress you want to buy, you can ask Pete your questions too.
